German Election Underway, With Polls Pointing to Opposition Conservatives Victory

Voters are choosing the next leaders in Germany which is Europe’s biggest economy with opinion polls pointing to a victory for the opposition conservatives under Friedrich Merz — and a repudiation of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his Social Democrats.

If Merz’s center-right CDU/CSU bloc does win, he’ll need at least one coalition partner to secure a majority in the lower house of parliament.

His government would face challenges ranging from reviving economic growth and securing energy supplies to navigating a geopolitical environment upended by US President Donald Trump, who is just weeks into his second term.
