Rap star Nicki Minaj made an appearance at the US mission to the United Nations (UN) on Tuesday to echo President Donald Trump’s claim that Nigeria is failing to prevent the persecution of Christians.
Minaj appeared alongside US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz at the event, which had the goal of amplifying Trump’s warning that there will be “hell to pay” if Nigeria doesn’t stop the killing of Christians.
Nigerian leaders including President Bola Tinubu — a Muslim whose wife is a Christian pastor — has rejected the claim of religious intolerance.
“I have seen how people no matter their language culture or religion come alive when they hear a song that touches their soul,” Minaj said. “Religious freedom means we all can sing our faith regardless of who we are, where we live and what we believe.”
In recent weeks, Minaj has reposted Trump social media messages on the issue, saying of one of them that “reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude.”
Waltz praised Minaj’s advocacy, saying the rapper was “stepping up” and “leaning into this issue.”
“You could be just living the good life, but you’re willing to come here today and roll up your sleeves and let’s try to solve this,” Trump’s UN envoy said. “Let’s try to save these people.”
