In view of the forthcoming general elections, stakeholders in Kaduna state have raised alarm over the rate in which politicians are luring the electorate into selling their voters’ card.

The concern was raised in Kaduna on Thursday during a stakeholders meeting, where representatives of political parties, traditional rulers, media, including other stakeholders were in attendance.

At the meeting, it was also alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may likely postpone elections in nine local government areas of Kaduna state under the guise of insecurity.

The Commission reiterated its commitment towards conducting free, fair and credible elections, while also denying the allegation of an attempted postponement of elections in some local governments in the state.

This is just as the administrative secretary of the Commission, Auwal Mashi, explained that buying of voters’ cards can not help any politician or group of individuals in their quest for election malpractices, but it would only disenfranchise whoever card has been sold.

“Selling of voters’ cards for material gains or for any reason by anybody must have done that at his or her detriment by only disenfranchising him or her self from participating in the election process. But this, with the new electoral act and the new technology provided for the conduct of the election would not in any way pave the way for rigging as assumed,” Mashi explained.

While reiterating the readiness of the Commission, the administrative secretary further explained that elections are expected to be conducted in 8012 polling units, adding that funds for logistics are already in the covers of the Commission in preparation of an hitch-free elections in the state.
