…as Labour Party says APC, INEC murdered democracy

Nath Gbaoron, Lafia

Over 500 women in Nasarawa State on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest, demanding for justice on the declaration of Governor Abdullahi Sule as the winner of the just concluded governorship and State Assembly elections held on Saturday 18 March, 2023.

The women who came out in their numbers were seen carrying placards with inscriptions such as INEC should give us back our mandate; let our votes count, Ombugadu won; we say no to election manipulation; Ombugadu won.

Leader of the group, Stella Oboshi, while speaking on behalf of the other women during the peaceful protest at the Lafia office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, said the purpose of the protest was to channel their grievances over the election results declared by Prof. Ishaya Tanko, the Vice chancellor of the University of Jos.

According to Oboshi, “INEC should know that we are suffering in this country especially in Nasarawa State, we are not here on political ground but we want justice to prevail.

“Leadership comes from God, he gives to a person at a time he wishes but some people don’t want to wait on God, they like to do otherwise.”

She further lamented that INEC went ahead to announce a winner of the governorship election even though there was contention in the results that emanated from Gayam and Ciroma electoral wards in the state capital.

“The governorship election and that of the House of Assembly were done the same day, the same time and with the same election materials. But the governorship election was announced; and that of the House of Assembly had not been announced up till this moment because it was declared inconclusive.

“If Gayam and Ciroma electoral wards results from Lafia LGA were included in the results that INEC announced for the governorship election but the Assembly elections were inconclusive in the same electoral wards, then INEC should also declare the governorship election inconclusive so that we can start from afresh,” She added.

Money central reports that in the just concluded election, the incumbent Governor, Abdullahi Sule, scored 347, 209 votes in the contest with his closest challenger, David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party who scored 283, 016 votes while Abdullahi Maidoya of the New Nigeria People’s Party scored 11,726 votes.

Meanwhile the former gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in Nasarawa state, Engr. Joseph Ewuga has kicked against the governorship results as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) saying democracy is being murdered in the state.

Speaking to Journalists in Lafia, Ewuga rejected the results in totality. Ewuga had two weeks until last Saturday’s election stepped down and collapsed his structures for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate David Ombugadu.

Ewuga said ” Nasarawa is not a Banana Republic where the rights of the  People will be thrown to the gutters and their votes will not count. We will not allow this impunity and rascality to stand,”.

“The exercise was marred with violence and complete voter disenfranchisement,” he said. He said the Labour Party in the state will join forces with the PDP to reclaim the mandate of the people.

Ewuga who described the election as “daylight robbery” also said him and the PDP candidate are still consulting with several other stakeholders to come out with an action of reclaiming the mandate of the people.

He said the All Progressives Congress candidate, Abdulahi Sule suppressed and intimidated the voters.

Ewuga said that in the Lafia Local Government Area, the APC candidate and INEC compromised the process. He said that the PDP candidate won the lawful votes cast but the APC candidate in the company of INEC and the security agents rewrote results.

He appreciated the people of the state for voting en masse for the PDP candidate and urged them to remain calm and wait for the next line of action.
