PenCom Net Assets Touch ₦29.5 Trillion Following Q1 Domestic Equity Rally

The Nigerian pension industry expanded in Q1 2026, with Net Asset Value (NAV) rising by ₦2.07 trillion to reach ₦29.52 trillion. Growth was primarily driven by a 38.09% revaluation rally in domestic equities and quarterly contributions amounting to ₦559.42 billion (a 38% QoQ increase).

Under PenCom’s Pension Revolution 2.0 agenda, benefit administration and digital compliance scaled significantly. However, persistent structural hurdles—such as an unfunded Personal Pension Plan (PPP) gap, slow data recapture, and asset concentration in Federal Government debt—continue to shape regulatory policy moving into Q2 2026.

Core Growth Drivers & Operational Milestones

  • Mortgage Equity Adoption at Scale: Section 89(2) implementation reached a milestone as 28,437 contributors accessed ₦92.70 billion from their Retirement Savings Account (RSA) balances to finance residential mortgage equity down-payments.

  • Rigorous Enforcement & ICPC Collaboration: PenCom recovered ₦1.18 billion from 15 defaulting employers. The regulator formally partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), leading to the interrogation of six recalcitrant firms.

  • Settlement of Legacy Obligations: The Federal Government disbursed ₦11.19 billion in accrued rights to 4,592 retirees and deceased contributors, automated through the Contribution and Bond Redemption Application (CABRA).

Structural Risks & Regulatory Interventions

  • Asset Diversification Imperative: With 58.07% of pension assets locked in Federal Government securities, PenCom issued an addendum to investment regulations to guide PFAs toward higher-yielding corporate bonds, infrastructure funds, real estate, and private equity.

  • Minimum Pension Guarantee (MPG): The Commission is progressing beneficiary identification, funding mechanisms, and affordable Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) health insurance structures alongside the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to operationalize the MPG for low-income retirees.
