After several years of despondency, hope is gradually building up for Wood and Wood Products sectoral group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, including Furniture Products sector of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

This is as it plans to set up plantation for indigenous and fast growing wood species which will serve the purpose of providing wood raw materials for users as well as research in wood quality on a regular basis.

Information from MAN’s office in Owerri, has it that the initiative was conceived during a collaborative meeting of the sector with the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), where it was thrown to the University to decide on the type of wood species it might offer the industry.

At the collaborative meeting, the group resolved to meet the Ondo State government through the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria to actually request for allocation of land for wood plantation since the sector is working in collaboration with FUTA.

And, if the plan is achieved successfully, Nigeria will save much in foreign exchange because the sector will go a long way to help to stem the rate at which wood is imported into Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the group has made a proposal to the Timber Trade Organisation to establish what it described as a modern sawmill which must be private sector driven.

This will warehouse the raw materials which will facilitate its processing and distribution, while stating that the major challenge faced by the Wood and Wood Products Sectoral Group is the inability to have an intermediate industry where wood would be semi-processed in various sizes based on the industry needs as well as corresponding process of drying the wood.
