The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a suspected fraudster, Joseph Nwakibe, who was said to have been invited to Yola by his friend Obinna Ajima (still at large) for joint fraudulent activities.

The police said Nwakibe was in possession of 10 expired Automated Teller Machine cards, which he allegedly swapped with victims’ cards at the ATM point in order to defraud them.

This was disclosed in a statement by the command on Friday, signed by its spokesman, Suleiman Yahaya.

The statement partly read, “Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspects go around with several expired ATM cards of various banks and await their victims. They usually queue behind customers, pretend as customers, and usually offer to assist anyone they perceive is having difficulties in making transactions. In the process, they take note of the person’s ATM card pin number and smartly swap the card with the fake one in their hand.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP SK Akande, while commending the effort of the operatives in apprehending such criminal minded elements, equally directed that effort be intensified to arrest the other suspect who is currently at large.

“The CP further advises members of the public to be careful and refuse any assistance from criminal elements while making bank transactions at ATM point, stating that on no account should they seek help from strangers but rather call on the attention of the bank security men should they need any help.”
