Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has expressed readiness to pass the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP ) Act into law
The governor made the commitment known during an advocacy meeting organized by the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Adamawa State branch in conjunction with Action Health Incorporated with support from UNIFA which took place in Yola.
The governor who was represented by the chief of staff of government house Yola, Prof Maxwell Gidado (SAN), said he is taking his time to holistically study the Act before signing it into law.
In an unprecedented feat, Adamawa State house of assembly has passed the bill into law since on March 1, 2021.
The governor who lauded the efforts of FIDA and other stakeholders in pushing for the signing of the bill into law said through that unprecedented feat, they had written their names in gold in the sands of time.
Gidado said the governor is working with relevant stakeholders to subject the document to rigorous tests so as to remove all grey areas that may bring rancour or disharmony in the polity.
Also commenting, member representing Demsa LGA in Adamawa state house of assembly, Hon Kate Mamuno, applauded FIDA for their tireless effort at ensuring that the bill go through all the readings at the House of Assembly and for it to be assented to by the governor.
She expressed optimism that the governor will sign the VAPP Act into law shortly.
She called on FIDA to continue with the campaign and escalate it to the common men, market women and rural areas so they people will be aware that perpetrators will not go unpunished when the Act is finally signed.
The chairman of FIDA Barrister Shanti Sashi thanked the governor for his prompt response.
She pointed out that the VAPP Act is not just for women alone but it covers everyone.
She called on all residents to put in their best efforts to ensure the act is signed into law as it is a service to humanity.
Commenting, Mrs Ruth Bitrus, the program officer Action Health Incorporated applauded Hon Kate Mamuno for her successful struggle on pushing the VAPP Act.
She called on Governor Fintiri to help in signing the Act as everyone awaited his assent for the VAPP Act to be made a proper law and justice will take its course in Adamawa state.
The workshop brought together stakeholders from different spheres of influence, the ministry of health, ministry of justice, CSO’s, NBA, FIDA UNFPA and the media.
