Some National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Members in Nasarawa state have organized a one day sensitization workshop for youths in Lafia, the state capital on Reproductive Health and Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS).
Mr Agada Joseph, President, NYSC Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS Group Fighters Community Development Service (CDS) Group in Lafia local government area made this known in Lafia.
According to him, the sensitization workshop is aimed at sensitizing youths and students of higher institutions in Lafia local government area on how to manage their reproductive health, preventive measures against HIV/AIDS and appropriate steps to take in managing their health.
“Sometimes the problems we are having in combating our health challenges, specifically HIV/AIDS in the country is as a result of ignorance. Vital information that the youths lack is a factor that is posing a threat to the elimination of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
“This is why we organized this sensitization to sensitize youths and students of tertiary institutions in this local government area on the right steps to take in line with the situation they find themselves,” he said.
He added that the workshop aims to train the participants on life building skills, peer education and management of sexual transmitted diseases.
“When we talk of life building skills, we are talking about goal setting, decision making and communication and many more. Hopefully the participants will be able to take home something new on Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS to help them live healthy lives,” he said.
Also speaking, Mrs Salome Vincent, Nasarawa state Coordinator of Family Planning at the state Ministry of Health lauded the initiative of the corps members and said the sensitization wil go a long way in enlightening youths in the local government area on important tips on Reproductive health and HIV/AIDS.
“When we were approached about this sensitization, we were very happy and deemed it fit to come and support them and give them the necessary backing because we feel they helping is doing our work in sensitizing the public on these issues,” she said.
She then advised youths to get tested so as to know their status and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
Miss Anita Bako, one of the participants described the workshop as an eye opener and promised to put into practice severely preventive measures mentioned at the workshop.
MoneyCentral gathered that several youths and students of Federal University of Lafia, College of Agriculture, Lafia and Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic attended the sensitization.
