Benue state Governor Samuel Ortom has expressed deep pains over the death of former Minister, Paul Iorpuu Unongo, even as the governorship candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance, Mr Joseph Waya has suspended campaigns in his honour.

Ortom stated that the foremost nationalist was a father figure who championed the emancipation of the ordinary citizens without ethnic or religious barriers.

In a statement in Makurdi, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nathaniel Ikyur quotes the governor as commending the leadership role of Pa Unongo in the political evolution of Nigeria, pointing out that he was a mentor to many present day leaders who had great ideas for the socio political and economic development of the country.

According to him, Unongo was one of the last icons of political leadership in Nigeria whose contributions to the politics of the country from post-independence till date cannot be quantified, saying Benue State has lost a leader and mentor.

“We shall miss his intellect, great ideas, oratory prowess and immense capacity for mobilization and organization of the people.”

Governor Ortom however expressed consolation that Pa Unongo’s legacies of patriotism, pan Nigerian and philanthropy will endure.

Meanwhile, Mr. Joseph Waya, the APGA Governorship candidate for Benue, has announced the suspension of his governorship campaign flag-off for Benue North East Senatorial District to mourn the passing of a political icon and mentor, Wantaregh Paul lorpuu Unongo.

In a statement he personally signed on Tuesday in Makurdi, Mr Waya said the suspension of his political activities within this period was a mark of respect and honour to the deceased who was his political mentor.

“While we await a full statement from the family, we announce the suspension of our governorship flag-off campaign in Benue North East senatorial district to honour our political sage and fallen hero.

“Benue has lost an illustrious son. I commiserate with the entire Nation over the passing of this great patriot. We mourn with the Tiv Nation over the passing of this great son, who epitomized the voice of the voiceless.”

According to Mr Waya, late Unongo was a political shepherd and one that stood in the gap between the old and new political generation.

He prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed statesman and prayed for the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss coming at a time when his wise counsel, sagacity and wealth of experience was most needed.
