Police rescue Kidnapped ex – INEC commissioner in Benue

The pandemonium that enveloped residents of Gaadi layout around Gboko road over the kidnapping of former Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Godwin Kwanga at his Makurdi residence is gradually subsiding as Benue police command has rescued him unhurt.

An eye witness, Justin Gbaka said, unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers had invaded the victim’s family house and took him to unknown destination last Tuesday.

According to him, Dr Kwanga is now a lecturer in the department of Geography at the Benue State University, Makurdi,

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Benue state Police command said, on 31st August, 2021 at about 11: 30 pm, information was received that the victim who left his business premises along George Akume way was kidnapped that fateful Tuesday to unknown destination.

Police Public Relations Officer for the command, DSP Sewuese Anene, said Police operatives were deployed immediately to commenced investigation and A Toyota Highlander SUV belonging to the victim was recovered on the same day while investigation continued.

“On 2nd September, 2021 at about 10am, information was gathered that the victim was held hostage at Tse-Anjov village, Welfare quarters, Makurdi. Operatives invaded the hideout and the suspects engaged the police in a gun duel but were overpowered by the police. The victim was successfully rescued unhurt while the hoodlums escaped with bullets wounds”.

The statement listed items recovered from the scene to include; 1 Ak47 rifle loaded with 8 live ammunition, 43 expanded ammunition and two Toyota Camry vehicles.

“Members of the public are advised to provide useful information to the police about any suspected movement of hoodlums and cooperate with officers who are on trial of the hoodlums”.

According to PPRO, the command under the leadership of CP. Tunji Akingbola assures people of Benue state of continuous efforts to rid the state of criminality.

Investigation revealed that within the last one months, several incidences of kidnapping have been recorded within Makurdi metropolis including that of the wife of Commissioner for Land, Survey and Solid minerals, Mrs. Ann Unenge.

The Police command through Operation ZENDA however, bursts several kidnapping syndicates in the state and swiftly made arrests in Logo and Ukum local government areas among others.
