Police Smashes Fraudster, Robbery Gang, Recovers Arms In Benue

Benue State Police command has confirmed the arrest of some notorious armed robbers and fraudsters terrorizing residents of Makurdi, the state capital in recent times.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, S.P Sewuese Anene in a statement in Makurdi, explained that on 5th April, 2022 at about 1030hrs, the Commissioner of Police, Wale Abbas received a report that on the same date at about 0300hrs, armed robbers broke into a house at New GRA Makurdi and made away with ATM cards, phones and other belongings.

“The robbers had transferred the sum of N300,000 from the victim’s accounts using the stolen ATM cards”.

“The CP deployed a team of detectives to trail and arrest the suspects but the suspects who knew that they were being trailed took to their heels until 15/6/2022 when two of them Sapele Great and Hakem Joseph Adi of different addresses were arrested in Makurdi”.

According to the PPRO, items recovered from the suspects includes, 1locally made pistol loaded with 9 rounds of 6mm live ammunition, 8 phones suspected to be stolen, 1electronic shocking device, 18 SIM cards of different networks, 1United Bank for Africa cheque book belonging to Agasha Philemon Atsume and other electronic devices suspected to be used to internet fraud.

The statement added that the suspects confessed to be cultists, armed robbers and fraudsters, while investigation is ongoing to arrest other suspects involved.

Meanwhile, cases of motorcycle theft is on the rise within Makurdi and its environ even as jungle justice is applied against those caught in the act around Owner Occupier Quarters.

Some few weeks ago, hoodlums that snatched a motorcycle from a commercial rider was given a hot chase and intercepted near Owner Occupier Primary school and set ablaze before police operatives arrived the scene of the incident.

A motorcycle rider, John Gbami while narrating his ordeal, said, two of the gang took by the road side and stopped him to convey them to a housing site from New GRA to Kanshio but on getting to the place, they pretended not to know their destination, calling on him to stop so as to make inquiries.

While in the course of doing so, one of them removed a pistol and showed him and asked him to cooperate, but he summoned courage and raised an alarm which they tool to their heels but were arrested by vigilant youth of the area.

According to Gbami, motorcycle operators have fallen victim of attacks by cultists and snatchers especially in areas like North Bank and Wadata, calling on security agents to rise to the occasion of surveillance.
