As part of efforts and commitment towards building a better society, the old students of St. John’s Secondary school Gboko, Benue state were in the school recently for their 33rd convention and reunion with the theme “The importance of Alumni Association in contemporary society.”
Speaking at the convention, the Acting President of St. John Old students Association (SAJOSA), Comrade Martins Adom, challenged the old students to see themselves as important stakeholders in the drive to achieve high moral and academic transformation of their alma mater.

“I invite all sets/ classes to remember our roots – our alma mater, St. John’s Secondary school, Gboko, Benue state. A lot has been given to us by the school, so let us imbibe the culture of giving back to it too.”
Adom who said he was always proud to be a ‘Johnite’ also tasked them to function as purveyors of infrastructural transformation in the institution, as leaving such tasks to the church and Parents Teachers Associations produce little fruits.
The President suggested that, when ever a class is celebrating an anniversary, they should initiate a project to execute in the school and possibly visit the school as part of the activities for the celebration. According to him, it will enhance the growth of the school.
The acting president of SAJOSA who is of class 2001, stated that the gathering was a reunion to brainstorm on how to take the alumni forward.
“So we just consider why we need to meet ourselves, being together to see how far we have gone and how we can motivate those of us that have not really reached a limit and Its a way of trying to know ourselves more at the same time,” Adom said.
According to the acting President, old students must not lose touch with their alma maters, rather, they should consistently re-unite and think about what they could do to develop where they have been moulded and transformed to become who they are.
“The essence of our gathering here this afternoon, is to see ourselves, that is number one. Its a convention to know how far God has blessed some of us and how we can give back to the school that moulded us.”
In his address the principal of the school, Rev. Fr. Raphael Tarlumun while appreciating SAJOSA for inviting him for such convention for the first time, solicited for collaboration between the old students and the school management.
The hgh point of the convention was the presentation of awards to Mr. Mede Achikima as the longest serving staff of the institution and Engr. Theophilus Terkura Ukaa for his contribution towards the growth of the alma mater while Ukaa also presented a paper on the “Importance of Alumni Associations in contemporary society.”
