An NNPC pipeline being constructed from the gas rich Eastern Nigeria to the West and North of the country with the potential to deliver 1 billion standard cubic feet of gas (scf), will achieve a major milestone when it crosses the River Niger in August, according to the NNPC GMD, Mele Kyari.

The pipeline will bring with it gas to power industry and thermal power plants in the country.

There are currently 23 gas power plants in the country, with installed capacity of 9,764, (MW), but only have 1,495 (MW) of gas supply contractual agreements available to them.
Shortage of gas means that once you have demand above 4,200 megawatts it often leads to system collapse.

Another pipeline being constructed is the Abuja – Kaduna – Kano (AKK), which will extend the spur from Ajaokuta. When complete the 48-inch pipeline will enable 2.4 billion Scf of gas to feed into the national network, Kyari said.

“Financing for the AKK pipeline has been secured, construction will begin in June 2020 and we shall have it delivered by latest 2022,” Kyari said.
