Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday, June 2, has confirmed the release of the former Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris from its custody.
Wilson Uwujaren, the Head of Media and Public Affairs of the commission, told the media in Abuja that Ahmed Idris was released after meeting his bail conditions.
He said;
I actually do not have idea of what the bail conditions are but all I can tell you is that he has been released after meeting his bail conditions.
Recall that the former AGF was arrested on May 16, by the EFCC over alleged diversion and laundering of N80 billion.
According to the EFCC, verified intelligence reports showed that Ahmed Idris raked off the funds through bogus consultancies and other illegal activities using proxies, family members and close associates.
The commission said the funds were laundered through real estate investments in Kano and Abuja.
It said Ahmed Idris was arrested after he failed to honour invitations by the commission to respond to issues connected to the alleged fraudulent acts.
Before his detention, the former AGF was summoned repeatedly for interrogation but he failed to honour the invitations.
What EFCC Said
EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren in a statement had said;
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, May 16, 2022 arrested serving Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris in connection with diversion of funds and money laundering activities to the tune of N80billion( Eighty Billion Naira only).
The Commission’s verified intelligence showed that the AGF raked off the funds through bogus consultancies and other illegal activities using proxies, family members and close associates. The funds were laundered through real estate investments in Kano and Abuja.
Mr Idris was arrested after failing to honour invitations by the EFCC to respond to issues connected to the fraudulent acts.
President Muhammed Buhari appointed Idris as accountant-general on June 25, 2015.
The position became vacant at the time after the former Accountant General, Jonah Otunla, left office on June 12, 2015.
