Benue NUJ Urges INEC On Neutrality During Governorship Polls

Benue State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to remain neutral and improve on its performance ahead of the Governorship polls.

The union which took this position after it’s  monthly Congress held at NUJ Secretariat Makurdi, also advised candidates that lost at the just concluded presidential and National assembly election to accept the outcome of the polls, or alternatively seek redress at the election petition tribunal.

The union commended Nigerians for trooping out in their numbers to perform their civic responsibility on 25th February, 2023 in electing the next president and members of the national assemblies across the states.

It notes with happiness that Benue people conducted themselves in an orderly manner during the exercise and implore them to sustain same in the forthcoming governorship and State Houses of assembly election holding on 11th March, 2023.

The communique signed by it drafting chairman, Kajo Martins and Secretary, Elizabeth Uta, also called on leaders of various political parties to hold their supporters to account by restraining them from songs that turns to injure opponents that lost their bid.

Congress acknowledged security forces especially, the Nigerian Police Force for ensuring law and order during the presidential and national assembly election in the state.

It commended the Chief Security Officer and governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom for ensuring security of lives and property, during and after victory celebration on the streets of the state unhindered.

The Council commended the Chris Isuguzo led NUJ and it’s decision arrived at the Special Convention held in Kano state which upgraded the minimum qualifications of the profession from Diploma to B.Sc or HND in Mass communication.

Congress resolved to enforce the new law as soon as the new Constitution is made available to the council and thumped up members for exhibiting high sense of professionalism in the state.
