The Federal Government (FG) has disclosed that it is currently in a partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to develop a biosecurity policy whose recommendations are expected to be approved before the end of this year.
The Director-General, National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Dr. Rufus Ebegba, at the second national review meeting of the draft National Biosecurity Policy and Action Plan in Abuja said that they are committed to work with partners in view to have a robust national biosecurity policy that would meet national aspirations and world standard.
As part of the commitment of the agency, Ebegba explained that NBMA would meticulously ensure that the review process, under the Federal Ministry of Environment, will take a critical look at the policy during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting and take the right decision.
“We are hoping that by the end of the year, it will become our national policy on biosecurity. We all owe this country a responsibility to ensure that this document comes out sound and meets international standards. The issue of biosecurity does not recognise boundaries.. The world must stand together to ensure that infectious organisms are properly contained,” he further explained.
While appealing to Nigerians, he said that stakeholders should see the national biosecurity policy as a major national assignment to minimize risks of biological threats in the country.
The WHO, who assured of its support for the Federal Government also said it would make the policy completed before the end of 2021 and it a working document.
