The yearly celebration of Eid al-Adha (‘Festival of Sacrifice’), the largest holiday in the Muslim calendar, begins on Saturday and finishes on Wednesday.

It marks the culmination of Hajj, the pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi Arabia, which is celebrated by Muslims around the globe.

The four-day celebration honors the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismail at the behest of Allah.

However, before the son was sacrificed, Allah gave Ibrahim a lamb that he was supposed to kill in this son’s place because of his willingness to sacrifice Ismail to God.

Muslims on the holiday traditionally thank Allah (God) for all the blessings they have received. It is also common for Muslims to greet and send good wishes to their loved ones.
