CBN Governor Says eNaira Transactions Hit N4bn

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday, disclosed that the volume and value of transactions on the digital currency (eNaira) platforms since it was introduced last year have reached 840,000 downloads and N4 billion respectively.

According to the Governor, the downloads of 270,000 active wallets comprise over 252,000 consumer wallets and 17,000 merchant wallets.

Emefiele who disclosed this during the eNaira Hackathon grand finale in Abuja said digital currency would soon become part of “our lives” and that 8 million users would be the fresh target.

President Muhammadu Buhari launched the eNaira in October last year as Africa’s first Central Bank Digital Currency.

The Governor also disclosed that starting from next week, Nigerians would start using USSD Code For eNaira Transactions with a view to improving the acceptability of the system.
