Alan Shearer has refused to rule out the possibility that Arsenal could suffer relegation from the Premier League this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side suffered yet another defeat on Saturday, falling 2-1 against Everton at Goodison Park.

Despite an improved performance from the Gunners, familiar frailties returned, including their inability to defend set pieces.

An own-goal from stand-in skipper Rob Holding handed the Toffees the lead, before a Nicolas Pepe penalty brought them parity.

However, Yerry Mina was allowed to head Everton back in front, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, with Arsenal suffering their eighth defeat of the campaign.

The result leaves Arsenal in 15 place in the table, just four points ahead of Burnley – who currently occupy the final spot in the relegation zone – despite having played two games more.

During a discussion on Match of the Day, it was proposed there was no chance Arsenal could suffer a humiliating relegation.

To that claim, Shearer replied: “I wouldn’t be so sure. Not with that starting team and the attitude of some of those players.”

Asked about their issues, Shearer added: “Awful, no creativity, players going through the motions, not working hard enough and not closing down.

“Mikel Arteta should be a worried man relying on that group of players trying to save his job. Twelve goals all season, they have no options.

“Against Everton, Pepe was not prepared to get into the box, he was jogging, sometimes walking. He has got to do more.

“There are a few players in that team who are not giving everything for the manager. Arsenal are never going to score goals playing like that.”
