Just as Manchester City were being crowned Premier League champions for the 2021/2022 season after their dramatic 3-2 win over Aston Villa, Burnley became the third side to be relegated to the second tier of English football, the EFL Championship.

Tottenham Hotspur made it into the Champions League by finishing in the top four with a 5-0 win over Norwich, while Arsenal finished fifth after a 5-1 win over Everton. Manchester United ended up sixth following a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. And Burnley were relegated after a 2-1 loss to Newcastle, while Leeds United stayed up with a 2-1 win over Brentford.

This was the second time in the last 10 Premier League seasons that a team won on the final matchday after trailing by 2 goals. The other instance was in the 2017-18 finale when Tottenham beat Leicester 5-4.

Here MoneyCentral takes a look at teams that survived relation and those promoted to play in the Premier League 2022/23  season.

Relegated Teams

Norwich City and Watford were already relegated entering the final day of the Premier League as Burnley and Leeds United were battling to avoid relegation. Leeds escaped relegation after a 2-1 victory at Brentford, while Burnley got relegated following a 2-1 home loss.

Everton had previously earned Premier League safety with a dramatic comeback win over Crystal Palace in the penultimate match of the season.

Promoted to the Premier League

Fulham and Bournemouth ensured they will be playing top-flight football in the 2022-23 season by clinching the top two spots in the Championship table.

Fulham won the Championship to gain automatic promotion to the Premier League, while Bournemouth came second on the table.

The third promoted side will be decided via a one-off play-off game on Sunday, May 29 at Wembley Stadium as Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest go head to head in a game for a place in England’s top-flight league.

If the game is not decided in 90 minutes, the game will go to 30 minutes of extra time. If a winner still cannot be crowned, the game will be decided by a penalty shootout.

Promotion to the Premier League is estimated to be worth almost $200 million for each club, while parachute payments (funds distributed by Premier League to relegated clubs to help soften the blow of the financial losses) over the next three seasons if they’re relegated straight back to the second-tier will help keep the clubs among the big boys in the Championship.
