Manchester City returned to their winning ways on Saturday, with an Erling Haaland brace leading the way in a 3-1 victory over Brighton.
The Citizens showed no ill effects from last week’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool, winning comfortably to move within one point of leaders Arsenal, who take on Southampton on Sunday.
Haaland made it seven home games in a row with a goal when he opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Ederson’s pass over the top found the Norwegian, who chested the ball past Robert Sanchez, shrugged off another defender and then slotted home into the empty net.
City came close to doubling their advantage though Kevin de Bruyne, but it was Haaland who did so thanks to his 17th Premier League goal of the season.
Bernardo Silva was caught by Lewis Dunk’s leg in the penalty area, and Haaland made no mistake from the spot.
The match looked like it could become a rout, but Brighton got back into the match after some sloppy work by City in possession after the break.
The ball eventually made its way to the feet of Leandro Trossard, who cut inside and fired from the edge of the area to beat Ederson at the near post.
Alexis Mac Allister, Tariq Lamptey and Trossard all came close to levelling the score, before De Bruyne secured all three points for City by curling a superb strike into the top corner from distance with a little over 15 minutes remaining.
