English Premier League side Manchester United have submitted an offer worth €80 million in total package for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Manchester United have made an opening bid of €60 million-plus €20 million in variables to secure the services of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window.

De Jong’s future at Barcelona has been a major doubt due to Barcelona’s financial crisis. The Catalans are considering selling the 25-year-old Dutch playmaker to generate funds despite the player’s reluctance to leave Camp Nou.

Manchester United are hoping to revamp the deal to boost their midfield department as Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are on their way out of Old Trafford. New manager Erik ten Hag has made de Jong his absolute priority, having worked with him in the past at AFC Ajax and gotten the best out of him.

Man United and Barcelona have been in talks over a deal for the Dutch midfielder for some time now. And the Red Devils are growing increasingly confident of striking an agreement with the cash-strapped Catalan giants.

Barcelona had been looking for an amount in the range of €80 million for their prized midfield asset. However, whether they are willing to accept an offer with a high variable portion remains to be seen.

De Jong himself is not sold over a move to Manchester United. The Netherlands star is keen on playing in the UEFA Champions League next season, which the Red Devils cannot offer. However, ten Hag’s presence could persuade the midfielder to make the switch to Manchester from Catalonia.

The report states that the 52-year-old has been in constant contact with de Jong and is trying very hard to convince him to move to England. Ten Hag is promising the midfielder a central role in his project and plans to build the rest of the team around him.
