Remo Stars win 2022 NPFL U15 Tournament

Remo Stars of Ikenne defeated Shooting Stars of Ibadan 2-0 in the final to emerge champions of the 2022  NPFL U15 tournament held at the Remo Stars Stadium on Sunday, 8th May 2022.

Ariehi Kparabo netted the two goals in each half of the game to give the home side their first U15 title.

Remo Stars finished top of their group with six points losing their last group game before going on to defeat MFM FC U15 2-1 in the quarter-finals and knockout Kano Pillars U15 in the semi-finals 2-0 before winning the final with the same scoreline to the delight of the home fans that came to Ikenne to watch and support their team.

Speaking after the final, Remo Stars head coach, Olawale Olwookere, praised his boys for their dogged performance in the final game and emphasized more on the purpose of the championship

“We had a plan and the players were able to go with the plan and we got the win.
“We are all happy to win this tournament for the first time; it’s a good thing for the development of grassroots football, and for the future of football in Nigeria,” Olwookere said

Olwookere further said there are plans for these players to play in European top league cubs in the future.

Shooting Stars tried to offset the two goals deficit, but could not stop the coordinated Remo Stars side.

“Not happy that we lost the final, but I am happy with the boys; they played their heart, but wasted so many chances. We are making our second appearance in this tournament after 2017 when we came for the first time, said Oladoja Jelili, Shooting Stars Club head coach.

Osaze Ebueku, Senior Manager, Sponsorship and Promotions at MTN Nigeria was excited at the quality of the the players and the tournament and assured that MTN Nigeria is fully committed to the growth and development of Nigerian grassroots football.

“The tournament has ended but, the game continues, for us at MTN Nigeria, we are very excited. This is worth money well spent. We saw the raw talents that were discovered from this tournament. These guys are the future of Nigerian football. Grassroot, youthful football is where we are looking forward to talents to feed into the Super Eagles.”

MTN Nigeria, the leading sponsor of Nigerian football assures that the partnership with the NFF is for a long time.

He further assured that MTN Nigeria will also focus more on growing Nigerian female football by investing more.

“MTN Nigeria is committed to the development of our female football, even as partners to the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and all the assets of the NFF including the Falcons and Falconets, currently, we are doing all of that. MTN Nigeria was part of the Aisha Buhari cup.

“Football is very robust, more so, as we focus more on our female football, and they are making Nigerians proud. Our investment in football is not tactical, but very strategic, provided we all work together with our partners, both the NFF to develop our football.”

Remo Stars join ABS FC U15 who won the trophy in 2017, Katsina United in 2019, and 2021 as the teams to have won the NPFL U15 title in the history of the tournament.
