Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is reportedly open to joining PSG in the summer amid rumours linking him with a departure from Barcelona.

Frenkie de Jong dreams of playing alongside Kylian Mbappe, meaning a move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) could be on the cards. The Dutch midfielder could leave Barcelona in the summer transfer window amid the Catalan club’s continued financial woes.

Frenkie de Jong’s career came into the limelight during his fruitful stint with Ajax, where he established himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe. The 25-year-old has bolstered that status since joining Barcelona in July 2019, even though the LaLiga heavyweights have barely experienced any success in the last three years.

The Dutch international has turned out 140 times for Barcelona thus far, chipping in with 13 goals and 17 assists in the process. But de Jong’s long-term future at Camp Nou is uncertain, as Barcelona could offload him to balance their books and fund moves in the summer transfer window. Such a situation has captured the attention of PSG.

The interest from PSG is understandable, considering Mauricio Pochettino does not have any creative midfielder at his disposal. While Pochettino’s job at PSG is under threat, Les Parisiens will have to sort out the mess that is their midfield department, with players either ageing or not performing consistently.

Georginio Wijnaldum has failed to impress since arriving on a free transfer last summer and close to 30 years. Idrissa Gueye, Ander Herrera and Danilo Pereira are also in their thirties. So Marco Verratti is the only dependable option for PSG in the long run, making de Jong a perfect target for PSG.

The Barcelona midfielder has now handed PSG a boost in his pursuit as he is open to joining them in the summer transfer window. Les Parisiens might be one of few clubs who could afford to pay the big bucks that Barcelona will demand to part with de Jong in the summer transfer window.

With the 25-year-old ready to join them, PSG will have the impetus to launch the offensive for him and secure his services early in the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if the Ligue 1 champions approach Barcelona for de Jong anytime soon.
