Boxing icon Tyson Fury called on Manchester United’s players to retire in the wake of their humiliating defeat away at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils were comfortably beaten by a Seagulls side that have found home wins hard to come by for the majority of this season. However, the victory never looked in doubt as United barely troubled shot-stopper Robert Sanchez until the result and three points were secure for Brighton.
Having gone in at the interval 1-0 up, an even more impressive second-half display ensured Brighton ended up 4-0 winners. Fury, who had been following the action from his home, was scathing in his review of the game.
In a short clip uploaded to his Instagram story, Fury bemoaned: “I tell you what, never mind the Gypsy King retiring, what do you say United why don’t they f****** retire – get off!”
The result ensured United made more unwanted history as they have now conceded more goals this term than in any other in their illustrious Premier League history. They also became the first side to ship four goals to Brighton and relegated-Watford in the same campaign.
Ralf Rangnick’s sixth-placed side were second best for the duration and can now only accumulate a maximum total of 61 points this term – three fewer than they managed in 2013-14, which began under David Moyes and finished with the caretaker management of Ryan Giggs.
United’s performance was arguably their worst of a miserable season – which has featured 11 defeats – to highlight the extent of the job facing incoming manager Erik ten Hag.
A stunning victory for rampant Brighton was a first in nine games on home soil, dating back to Boxing Day, to boost their hopes of a first Premier League top-half finish. United were bullied from the outset and it did not take long for chants against the club’s owners to emerge from the travelling support.
Cries of ‘love United, hate Glazers’ and ‘we want Glazers out’ rang out in the early exchanges amid a blistering start from Brighton. No Champions League football next season is damning enough for a club of United’s stature, but there is every chance they could slip further yet.
Should West Ham win at least two of their remaining three league fixtures of the season, the Hammers could leapfrog United into sixth place – meaning the Red Devils would miss out on the Europa League and fall into seventh place and the Conference League.
