Donald Trump won South Carolina’s GOP primary, defeating Nikki Haley in her home state and further propelling him toward a rematch with President Biden.

Donald Trump: Decisive wins in the first major nominating contests have given the former president an air of inevitability. While his legal problems remain a major unknown, Trump said in his victory speech he was confident he’d defeat President Biden in November, “We’re going to say ‘Joe, you’re fired.’”

VP Talk: Those close to Trump say Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York are among the contenders to be the vice-presidential candidate.

Nikki Haley: The former South Carolina governor’s loss heightens pressure for her to drop out of the contest. But Haley has said she will stay in the race until Super Tuesday next month.

On Voters’ Minds: Most GOP voters in the primary have a favorable view of Trump, while more than half oppose continued aid to Ukraine, according to an AP survey.

As part of his speech Saturday, Donald Trump praised Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina – his former opponent, now outspoken ally and potential future running mate – as a great advocate. Scott endorsed Trump before the New Hampshire primary and has been a top surrogate.

Trump again Saturday repeated that Scott had been a poor candidate for himself and improved dramatically when campaigning for the former president. “I said what happened to Tim Scott? What a dynamo… I’m just very happy he didn’t have the same energy, drive because I think I probably would have been out of the race a long time ago.”

Scott, for his part, said that Trump’s comments were spot on. He said he had struggled in his own campaign to appear both humble and tout himself.

“What you’re witnessing is just a guy who’s been free from the internal struggle on how to promote myself without being braggadocious,” he said.
