The kidnappers who reportedly abducted Chief Sir Joseph Ezeokafor, Chairman of Jezco Group and father of Nigerian socialite Jowizaza, have allegedly increased their ransom demand from N700 million to N1.5 billion.
Ezeokafor, a businessman in his 70s, was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Tuesday after leaving his residence to attend a prayer ground as part of his annual spiritual retreat. Reports indicate that he went out without his security escorts.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the abductors initially demanded N700 million for his release. The family was reportedly prepared to meet the demand in a bid to ensure his safe return.
However, the kidnappers are said to have subsequently raised the ransom to N1.5 billion.
Despite the increase, the family has reportedly remained willing to negotiate. Their efforts have, however, been complicated by an alleged communication blackout, as the abductors are said to have stopped contacting them.
“The family has been willing to negotiate and do whatever is necessary to secure his release, but the kidnappers have suddenly stopped communicating,” the source reportedly said.
The loss of communication has left the family unable to confirm Ezeokafor’s current condition or determine where he is being held.
The development has reportedly increased tension among his relatives, business associates and members of his community, who are increasingly worried about the septuagenarian’s safety.
Reports further indicate that more than a week after the alleged abduction, neither the Anambra State Police Command nor the state government had publicly commented on the incident.
The alleged jump in the ransom demand has further complicated the family’s efforts to secure the businessman’s release, while uncertainty continues to surround his whereabouts and wellbeing.
