Tony Elumelu’s investment vehicles are poised to collect about $14.45 million from Seplat Energy Plc’s latest shareholder payout, marking another cash return from the billionaire’s purchase of a 20.07% stake in the Nigerian oil producer less than a year ago.

Seplat declared a 5-cent-per-share interim dividend and a 7-cent special dividend for the second quarter, for a combined distribution of 12 cents a share. The company said the payment would be made on or around Aug. 28 to shareholders on its register at the close of business on Aug. 13.

Elumelu-linked entities Heirs Energies Ltd. and Heirs Holdings Ltd. own a combined 120.4 million Seplat shares, giving them the largest disclosed position in the company. The holding generates a gross dividend entitlement of $14.448 million, split between about $10.40 million for Heirs Energies and $4.05 million for Heirs Holdings.

Why it matters

The latest payment shows the cash-generating potential of Elumelu’s Seplat investment following the acquisition of the stake from Maurel & Prom for roughly $496 million in late 2025. The 120.4 million shares represent 20.07% of Seplat’s issued capital.

Seplat’s combined $72 million second-quarter payout reflects both its regular dividend policy and a special distribution, with the latter helping channel a larger share of the company’s cash generation back to investors.

Based on the reported estimate, Elumelu’s  Seplat dividends so far in 2026 for Q1 and Q2, including this latest payment, has totaled approximately $25.3 million.

Leadership

Elumelu joined Seplat’s board as a non-executive director in January 2026 and has been elected to become chairman effective Jan. 1, 2027. His Heirs Holdings stake makes him both the company’s largest shareholder and its incoming board chairman, increasing investor focus on governance, capital allocation and dividend policy.

The cash payout comes as the market value of the 20.07% interest is now worth approximately $1.07 billion, doubling the purchase price in less than eight months.

That means the investment has produced both substantial paper gains and a growing dividend stream, although future payouts will remain dependent on Seplat’s production, oil prices, operating costs, funding needs and board-approved distribution policy.
