Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto State and the lawmaker representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Tambuwal announced his decision in a resignation letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to the PDP ward chairman of Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward in Tambuwal Local Government Area of the state.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria said the decision followed extensive consultations with political associates and supporters.
“After deep reflection and wide consultations with my political associates and supporters, I have decided to resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party with immediate effect,” Tambuwal stated.
He explained that persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements and growing divisions within the PDP had made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the party.
“The ongoing conflicts within the party have weakened the unity and direction that once defined the PDP,” he said.
Tambuwal, however, expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity it gave him to serve the country in different capacities.
“I remain grateful to the PDP for the platform it provided me to serve Nigeria, including my time as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as Governor of Sokoto State,” he added.
The senator confirmed that he had formally joined the ADC alongside his political associates and supporters.
According to him, the decision was driven by the need to align with a political platform that prioritises integrity, accountability, inclusiveness and national development.
“Nigeria requires a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness and a clear commitment to national development,” Tambuwal said.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to the service of Nigeria and the promotion of democracy, justice and national unity.
Tambuwal served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015 before emerging governor of Sokoto State in 2015 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He later returned to the PDP where he won re-election as governor in 2019 and completed his second term in 2023.
He was subsequently elected senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District.
His defection to the ADC is expected to have significant political implications in Sokoto State, where he remains one of the most influential political figures.
