Bill seeking the review of the Kaduna Local Government administration activies in the state has been passed into law by the Kaduna state House of Assembly.
According to tbe Assembly during its session on Wednesday, the purpose of the Bill is to amend the Kaduna state local government law of 2018, and to strenghten the operations of the Kaduna local government administration.
While speaking to newsmen shortly after the Bill was passed into law, the sponsor of the Bill, Hon. Ali Kalat, member representing Jema’a constituency explained that the present law has given the Assembly the power to checkmate the local government activities in the state.
The lawmaker however explained that the 2018 local government law created a lacuna that hindered the Kaduna Assembly to checkmate the abuse of power by some local government Chairmen.
Kalat said that the new law, as amended, has given them the right to suspend any erring local government Chairman or Vice Chairman in the state.
” As a body that makes laws and appropriates funds on behalf of the people of Kaduna state, we should have the right to suspend any erring local government Chairman in the interest of the people and the state. The law is to promote accountability,” the lawmaker emphasised.
A member representing Zonkwa constituency, Barrister Bako Kantiok, also explained that the new law is basically aimed towards enhancing the activities of the local govt., and to also ensure that there is proper check and balance on the activities of local government.
Kantiok who is the minority leader further said that the law is to encourage the local government Chairmen in the state to providing proper services to the people in their respectives local government areas.
According the new law as amended by the lawmakers, “the Assembly in exercise of its power under section128 of the constitution have the power to suspend a local government Chairman or Vice Chairman or any person acting in his capacity.
” Where at the expiration of the three months suspension, the investigation is not concluded, the House may by another resolution extend the suspension for a further period of three months.”
