The Nasarawa State government is taking steps to regulate and potentially shut down unregistered and unknown NGOs across the state, aiming to tackle issues of dubious individuals posing as NGO owners.
The Commissioner for Special Duties, Humanitarian, Social Services, and NGOs, Hon. Margret Elayo, who announced the plans on Monday said the government will enhance NGO operations, ensuring they function effectively and prevent resource duplication.
The government also reiterated its commitment to collaborate with genuine NGOs to address the needs of marginalized residents and achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Hon. Elayo called for stakeholders’ support in achieving these objectives and highlighted the essential role of NGOs in improving livelihoods, particularly at the grassroots level.
“In Nasarawa, under the able leadership of Governor Abdullahi Sule, we express confidence in the NGO’s tirelessly serving our people. These organizations have been instrumental in enhancing the lives of the Nasarawa state residents, providing essential support to meet their basic needs.
“They play critical roles in implementing projects and programmes that directly impact on the people, particularly at the grassroots.
“The state government would, therefore, not relent to encourage and partner the NGOs in the areas of expertise and technical know-how in the execution of some key projects to reduce unemployment and tackle poverty across the state,” she added.
