The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has inaugurated the construction of 500 housing units in Yola south of Adamawa State.

Mohammed Alkali, the Chief Executive Officer of the NEDC, and the state Governor Ahmadu Fintiri jointly performed the foundation laying ceremony of the first 300 units at the state capital, Yola.

In his address, the NEDC chief executive officer explained that while 300 units of the houses will be in Yola, 200 others will be located in other major towns in the state.

Giving a background to the decision to put up the 500 housing units in Adamawa State, the NEDC boss said that the initiative is in line with part of NEDC’s Mandate to rehabilitate and reconstruct homes and commercial premises destroyed by Boko Haram terrorists.

The executive Director noted that the location of 500 houses in Adamawa and four other states of the Northeast was a deliberate effort of the NEDC to replicate Federal Government’s earlier decision to build 10,000 houses in the epicenter of the Boko Haram insurgency state like Borno, Yobe and Adamawa State, in order to mitigate the destruction done by terrorism.

Food and nonfood items were distributed in the same vein in order to reduce the food insecurity in the state.

“Today, as part of the strategy, we are going to hand over the following Food items to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Adamawa State for onward distribution to our people of concern in the State: Bags of Rice(25kg), 10,000, Gallons of Vegetable Oil 10,000, Bags of Sugar 2,000, Cartons of Spaghetti 3,000, Cartons of Macaroni 2,000,” Mohammed Goni said.

The NEDC also donated non-food items in its support to IDPs and other vulnerable groups in the State, including 3,000 blankets, 3,000 mats, 1,000 mosquito nets, and 10,000 mosquito hand bands.

Gov. Fintiri, who was accompanied by his Deputy, Chief Crowther Seth and other senior government officials, inspected and received a fully equipped Infectious Diseases Laboratory for the testing of COVID–19 and other diseases as provided and installed at the Specialist Hospital, Yola, by the NEDC.
