Oyo residents on Thursday took to the streets of Ibadan, Oyo State capital following the killing of a corps member at New Garage area of the state by yet to be identified police officers.

It was gathered that the corps member, whose identity was still unknown, was returning from Community Development Service (CDS) in Oluyole Local Government Area when the incident happened.

According to an eyewitness, the corps member, who was driving a white Toyota Camry car, was flagged down by the Oyo policemen, but he did not stop.

The policemen were said to have pursued the corps member to New Garage and blocked his car.

The corps member, who was unaware that the policemen were pursuing him, reportedly rolled up the glass of his car and refused to talk to them.

The witnesses said one of the officers was enraged and shot him in the chest and head at close range, which left him unconscious.

The incident reportedly led to a protest in the area.

However, the Oyo State Police Command has issued a statement saying that it

“wishes to dispel rumours making the rounds about a shooting incident involving a Police Officer and a National Youth Service Corps member as mischievous and a fictitious imagination of mischief agents.”

According to the police, “Preliminary investigations/Independent Witness Accounts revealed that a reckless driving Corps member in the company of his colleagues while returning from their Community Development Service (CDS) in a White tinted Toyota Camry with Reg No ABY 237 JR was flagged down by operatives on legitimate Stop and search duties along Black Horse Area, New Garage, Off Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road.

“However, he drove directly towards the direction of the Officers, thereby knocking down, one Sgt Agbadahun Bright.

“Resolute in his actions and in a view to escape, he drove off without batting an eyelid and veered off his lane towards the direction of other incoming vehicles till he ran into a Tricycle from where the policemen caught up in him.”
