A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja sentenced former Minister for Power Saleh Mamman to 75 years in prison over a record N33.80 billion fraud.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment, convicting Mamman on all 12 counts filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following months of proceedings that examined multiple layers of alleged financial misconduct linked to his time in public office.
This is one of the largest amounts of money stolen by a public office holder in Nigeria.
Analysts say the EFCC and the judiciary deserve a term of approbation for rigorously thorough investigation.
In the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International in February 2026, Nigeria ranked 142nd out of 182 countries.
