Search and rescue efforts continue to find the missing submersible Titan, with time running out before the oxygen supply for the five people on board runs out.
The submarine, which began its descent at 8am (local time) on Sunday and was due to resurface 7 hours later, has a capacity to hold up to 96 hours of emergency air.
This, therefore, means that the emergency supply will likely run out on Thursday morning.
Teams involved in search operations have heard ‘underwater noises’ while searching in the area. The source of the sound, however, is yet to be found.
The United States Coast Guard, which is involved in the search and rescue operations, has, however, said that it is still ‘unclear’ if these ‘banging noises’ are a ‘true signal of life.’
According to ocean expert Matt Dzieciuch, the noise may be emanating from sources such as fish, other animals, and human-made instruments.
Rescuers tasked with locating Titan are up against obstacles such as underwater mountains and valleys, deep-sea water pressure, weather conditions, and a search area twice the size of the US province of Connecticut.
