Two presidential candidates, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, and Peter Obi of Labour Party have promised to run a government based on law and order and to revamp the economy and security of lives and property if elected as president next year.
The candidates who took their turn to address the annual general conference of NKST Synod held at Mkar, Gboko local government area of Benue state, Atiku promised that no ethnic group will be marginalized or threatened under his regime.
Represented at the occasion by his campaign director of election management, former Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, prof. Iyorwuese Hagher, noted that Benue state has produced great leaders such as former governor Aper Aku, J.S. Tarka described Benue as his second home.
He charged people of the state and NKST congregation to sustain prayers for God to heal the land and rescue the country to greater heights.
Atiku said he was in their midst to tell them why he is running for presidency and to seek their cooperation and support the victory of PDP which have their sons like senator Iyorchia Ayu, governor Samuel Ortom, Margaret Icheen among others.
Speaking, Peter Obi promised to protect and harness the vast economic potentials in Benue for people to maximize the benefit of comparative advantages the state had in agriculture and solid minerals.
The labour party presidential candidate also promised to secure Benue land so that farmers and the host community will be safe for children to go to school and secure employment upon graduation.
According to him, he was in the state on the invitation of the synod to address them on topical issues in the country as it affects the next year’s general election.
Obi posited that the church constitutes a significant component of the voting population in the country which made him honour their invitation.
He stated that if voted, he will reduce the cost of governance and check corruption and other forms of criminality and urged members of the church to think about the future of their children by voting wisely in next year’s election.
Responding to their separate presentations, president of NKST and chairman of synod, Reverend D.Z. Anza expressed appreciation to both Atiku and Obi for their visits, saying only God can grant their political wishes at an appropriate time.
