The football governing body, FIFA has made plans to push the live trials of robot referees, the “limb tracking” technology developed to make off-side calls in the club world cup.

“Robo-refs” is a semi-automatic system that actively uses computer programs and also algorithms to make and determine off-side calls. Its success at the club world cup would determine its availability at the World Cup.

This recent development by the world football governing body would make Chelsea the first premier league club to make use of the new technological marvel.

Fifa’s football technology and innovation director, Johannes Holzmuller, explained:

“When the ball is played, the real-time AI software can send a signal automatically to the VAR.

“We will have a committed assistant VAR who can process the offside data and help determine if the player deemed to be offside was active and interfering with play, so they can swiftly validate and confirm the decision.”
