Gareth Bale was last night locked in talks over making a sensational return to Tottenham, according to The Mirror

The report stated that Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett confirmed negotiations were taking place between Spurs and Real Madrid over a potential loan deal for the Wales superstar.

Tottenham have made the ambitious approach to try and beat off Manchester United and there is a genuine chance Bale could end up at White Hart Lane.

Barnett said: “Gareth still loves Spurs. It’s where he wants to be.”

The deal would be an incredible coup for Tottenham and huge boost for Jose Mourinho. Real Madrid have made him available for transfer and that has alerted both Spurs and United.

Spurs boss Mourinho has been desperate to strengthen his squad and Tottenham are now trying to make it happen with Real Madrid.

There is still a huge hurdle to overcome as Bale is on £600,000-a-week and yet it is understood that Real Madrid are ready to subsidise his wages to get him off the books.

It could mean Spurs end up paying £250,000-a-week in wages while Real Madrid would also prefer a permanent move over a loan switch but it is believed both sides are hopeful they can reach an agreement.

Bale, 31, left Tottenham to join Real for a then world record £85m in 2013 and has since scored more than 100 goals and won four Champions League titles.

The Wales forward has become one of the most successful British exports of all time but has fallen out of favour with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

Relations have reached breaking point after Bale was left fuming that Real Madrid blocked a move to China last summer – only then to continue to freeze him out.

But this latest breakthrough now means this is the best chance of Bale returning to English football since he left seven years ago.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are also close to sealing a move for Real Madrid left back Sergio Regulion.

Regulion, 23, had been in talks with Manchester United who have been after the defender impressed on loan at Sevilla last season.

But Spurs have now made an offer and the Spain international is now discussing personal terms ahead of a potential £25m move.

Real Madrid had been keen on a buy back clause which put off United but Spurs are keen to bolster their squad and appear to be ready to do a deal.
