MTN Nigeria Communications Plc is positioning its fintech subsidiary, MoMo Payment Service Bank (MoMo PSB), to capture market share in digital micro-lending and rural financial services, according to Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola.

Speaking to analysts and investors during the company’s H1 2026 post-earnings conference call, Toriola emphasized that while the broader financial services landscape is undergoing rapid structural evolution, MTN Nigeria intends to play a central role through technology deployments and agent network expansion.

The focus on digital credit and rural merchant acquisition comes as telecom operators across West Africa seek to diversify beyond traditional voice and data revenue toward higher-margin financial service ecosystems.

Key Takeaways from Executive Remarks

  • Micro-Lending Market Opportunity: Toriola highlighted micro-lending as a key long-term growth engine, signaling MoMo PSB’s intent to deliver credit products tailored for underbanked consumers and small businesses.

  • Rural Agent Acquisition: MTN is expanding its physical MoMo agent and merchant footprint into rural and peri-urban areas, widening the funnel for cash-in/cash-out (CICO) transactions and digital wallet adoption.

  • Fintech Stack Upgrades: The company is deploying updated technology infrastructure to improve platform stability, lower transaction friction, and support third-party integrations with financial institutions.
