The Nigerian government has set up a dedicated security team to protect oil pipelines across the country in a bid to curb crude theft and sabotage, which has long blighted the critical sector, the Nigerian National Petroleum Co. said in a statement June 11.
The inter-governmental security outfit has been put under the direct supervision of President Bola Tinubu’s security adviser and features representatives from the military, police and NNPC.
Nigeria’s struggle to boost oil and gas output stems from multiple factors including pipeline vandalism, crude theft, infrastructure degradation and regulatory challenges. The security outfit addresses only the theft and sabotage component, but represents a necessary step toward restoring investor confidence in the sector’s operational integrity.
