Standard Bank Group Ltd., Africa’s largest lender by assets and parent company of Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc, is in early-stage negotiations to acquire a equity stake in Nigeria-focused digital payments platform OPay Digital Services Ltd.

The strategic transaction comes as OPay prepares for a New York initial public offering (IPO) that could value the fintech firm at $4.0 billion—double the $2.0 billion valuation achieved during its Series C funding round in 2021.

OPay has retained Citigroup Inc., Deutsche Bank AG, and JPMorgan Chase & Co. as lead underwriters for the planned US listing.

Market Implications & Strategic Rationale

  • Bridging Traditional Banking & Digital Payments: A pre-IPO equity investment would allow Standard Bank to gain direct exposure to Nigeria’s largest mobile money and agency banking network, bridging the gap between traditional commercial banking balance sheets and digital payment rails.

  • Profitable Turnaround: OPay achieved full profitability in 2025 after transaction volumes more than doubled to $358 billion, benefiting from a rapid shift toward cashless electronic transfers and agency banking across Nigeria.

  • Sub-Saharan Fintech Boom: The deal reflects broader regional expansion as sub-Saharan Africa consolidates its dominance in global mobile money. According to GSMA data, the region processed $1.4 trillion in digital transactions in 2025 (~66% of global mobile money activity), with industry revenues projected by McKinsey & Co. to reach $47 billion by 2028.
