Americans received a payment worth $1,702 on Thursday from the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) which rewards everyone who lives in the state.
The PFD has been paying Alaskan citizens out of the surplus of the state’s oil and mineral reserves since 1982.
Alaska produces approximately 466,800 barrels per day of oil, with incremental growth expected due to new projects like the Nuna and Pikka fields on the North Slope.
At its peak in 1988, Alaska produced about 2 million barrels per day, but mature fields and operational challenges have led to a decline since.
As of mid-2025, the Alaska Permanent Fund, which serves as Alaska’s sovereign wealth fund, is valued at approximately $84.6 billion. This makes it one of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the United States. The Fund has grown from just $734,000 in 1977.
It has delivered an average return of about 9.15% over the past 5 years.
An estimated 600,000 people a year claim the cash, which is made up of two components.
This year’s first component is made up of the base benefit of $1403.83, and the second is a bonus for energy relief, making up the remaining $298.17.
This brings 2025’s total payment to $1702.
In a statement on the website, Genevieve Wojtusik, Division Director of the PFD, promised eligible Alaskans another year of payments.
“Our mission is to administer the permanent fund dividend program assuring that all eligible Alaskans receive timely dividends,” she said.
“Fraud is prosecuted, and all internal and external stakeholders are treated with respect.”
The PFD is paid out in several windows, with the first one happening on September 11.
Those who had the status “Eligible – Not Paid” on their application will receive the money on that date.
Alaskans who have the same status on September 18 will be paid on October 2.
The third window is on October 13 for those with the same status.
Alaskans who have that status on that day will be paid on October 23.
The cash is taxed at the federal level.
