The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued alerts for potential flash floods in at least twenty-five states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to heavy rainfall expected on Thursday and Friday, September 28 and 29, 2023.
NiMet specified that states including Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, and Kaduna are likely to experience heavy rainfall. Additionally, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Abia should prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall.
The forecast also indicated that Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, Benue States, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) may experience moderate to heavy rainfall.
In contrast, other parts of the country are expected to receive very light or no rain.
NiMet emphasized the potential threat of strong winds to weak structures, trees, and masts, advising residents in affected areas to disconnect electrical appliances before and during the rains.
Furthermore, the agency cautioned against driving through surface runoff waters, as they may have strong undercurrents. Other potential hazards include slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility, which can disrupt road traffic. NiMet strongly recommended avoiding the temptation to drive through such surface water for safety reasons.
