The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has announced a condition to withdraw his case against the academic records of President Bola Tinubu.
Atiku, a former Vice President, said he will only withdraw his case against Tinubu’s credentials after the Supreme Court delivers judgement.
He made the declaration at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, October 5, 2023.
The former Vice President also called on the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join him in the fight to establish the authenticity of Tinubu’s certificate.
Atiku said: “This quest is not for or about Atiku Abubakar. It is a quest for the enthronement of truth, morality, and accountability in our public affairs.
“In line with this, therefore, I am calling on all well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thought, our religious leaders, our traditional leaders, our community leaders, our political leaders, and in particular, Governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP and, the leaders of every political party in Nigeria, and, indeed, every single person who loves this country, as I do, and who wishes nothing but the best for the country, as I do, to join me in this campaign to enshrine probity, accountability, and the basic principles of justice, morality, and uprightness in our country and in our government.
“This is a task for each and every one of us.”
The Star had reported that the Chicago State University (CSU) in the United States released Tinubu’s academic records to the PDP presidential standard-bearer on Monday, October 2.
The university released Tinubu’s credentials to Atiku in compliance with the order of a United States District Court in Northern District of Illinois.
Atiku had approached the court seeking to compel the university to release Tinubu’s records on the grounds that the credentials would strengthen his suit challenging the president’s electoral victory.
Though Tinubu’s credentials showed that he graduated from CSU in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting and management, Atiku maintained that the president’s academic records from primary school to university were questionable.
The PDP presidential candidate had also approached the Supreme Court to nullify the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court which upheld the victory of Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
