Nigeria’s parliamentary leadership has suspended lawmakers’ official travel to South Africa over xenophobic attacks.
Senators and house representatives have also been ordered to boycott legislative events hosted by South Africa, Kamoru Ogunlana, the clerk to the National Assembly, said in a statement dated Sept. 10. This comes days ahead of the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, holding in Cape Town, Sept. 13-19.
“This decision is in response to the continuing reports of xenophobic attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property and other forms of hostility against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa,” the statement said.
