President Bola Tinubu has held a meeting with Abdullahi Adamu, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Iyiola Omisore, the party’s former national secretary, at the presidential villa in Abuja.

Both men who arrived together for the meeting, were seen exiting after the session at about 1.30pm on Tuesday.

Adamu and Omisore were said to have quit their roles a week ago, following a meeting of the APC national working committee (NWC).

It was not clear whether Adamu and Omisore met with President Bola Tinubu who was in Kenya for the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union when both men resigned on July 17, 2023.

But their visit was not unconnected to the crisis brewing in the ruling party.

Last week Monday, APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Senator Abubakar Kyari, emerged as the party’s National Chairman and succeeded Adamu as the party’s chairman after a NWC meeting in Abuja.

The resignations of both men fuelled reports of upheaval within the party. However, the APC dismissed the insinuations as speculative.

Abubakar Kyari has since assumed office as acting chairman and Festus Fuanter as the acting national secretary.

While Abdullahi Ganduje, former governor of Kano, has been mentioned as President Tinubu’s preferred candidate for the national chairmanship position, Gboyega Oyetola, former governor of Osun, and Ajibola Basiru, former spokesperson of the senate, have been reported to be in the running for the national secretary office.
