Port Harcourt-based football club side, Rivers United, defeated Gombe United 1-0 on Sunday to emerge champions of the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season with 77 points finish.

Plateau United and Remo Stars who finished runners-up and third place will feature in the CAF Champions League for next season.

Governor Neysom Wike of Rivers State, rewarded each player and official of Rivers United N1 million for winning the last match of the NPFL season, adding that the money was not part of what the state government had packaged for them for winning the title, for the first time in their history.

MFM, Kano Pillars, Heartland and Katsina United could not survive the season as they were relegated, having finished one, two, three and four places behind, dropping to the lower division of Nigeria football.

The final day of the 2022 Nigeria Professional Football League season saw many home teams winning their matches with some escaping the drop on the final day.
