Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday, called on citizens to appreciate the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding heroes and remain united in the face of current challenges, regardless of religious or ethnic differences.
The governor made the call during the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
Speaking on the theme “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing,” Governor Makinde, represented by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, noted that Nigeria’s independence in 1960 was earned through the sacrifices and relentless struggles of the nation’s founding fathers.
Makinde, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, in Ibadan, the state capital, stressed that the freedom enjoyed today is a product of their labour and should inspire every citizen to be responsible and committed to nation-building.
He added that the anniversary offers an opportunity for sober reflection on the challenges confronting both Nigeria and Oyo State. He noted that independence has taught Nigerians how to govern themselves within the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The governor emphasized that unity remains non-negotiable for Nigeria’s progress. With over 250 ethnic groups living together as one corporate entity, he said the nation’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division, urging Nigerians to cultivate the ability to stay united.
Makinde said: “We must appreciate our heroes past for what they did to achieve and attain independence in 1960. Independence was earned through their sacrifices and countless struggles. The freedom we enjoy today is a result of their labour.
“As we reflect on our nation’s journey since 1960, we must acknowledge the challenges we face in all ramifications. As a state, we also have our own challenges in Oyo State.
“This day calls for sober reflection on the issues confronting us at both the national and state levels. But we must also appreciate that independence teaches us, at both national and state levels, how to govern ourselves. And we cannot govern ourselves without upholding the rule of law and the tenets of democracy.”
Recounting the achievements of his administration, the governor Oyo has recorded remarkable progress across all sectors, including education, security, sports, economy, and infrastructure.
He appreciated the people of Oyo for their cooperation and support, which he said has enabled the government to achieve its set goals.
“Since 2019, when this administration was elected, we have achieved feats and progress in all spheres of life: education, security, sports, business, and infrastructure.
“In terms of security, we have put in place a robust arrangement through the establishment of the Amotekun Corps, which works collaboratively with other security agencies to maintain peace in Oyo.
“On infrastructure, we have spread development across the five zones of Oyo State; Oke-Ogun 1 and 2, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Ibarapa, and Ibadan. People attest to the fact that this administration has done a yeoman’s job in expanding infrastructure: education facilities, road networks, Light Up Oyo State, hospitals, and more.”
Makinde congratulated the people of Oyo State and Nigerians on witnessing another Independence Day celebration and urged everyone to continue to live together in peace for the betterment of the country.
Highlights of the celebration included a march past, cultural displays, and presentation of prizes.
The event was attended by the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mohammed Fadeyi; the state Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima; Head of Service, Adenike Fashina; Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke; other Commissioners; Permanent Secretaries; President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Ajeniyi Ajewole; Chairman of All Chairmen, Sikiru Sanda; service commanders; religious leaders; traditional rulers; top government functionaries; and other dignitaries.
