Citibank Nigeria Ltd. has appointed Nneka Enwereji as chief executive officer, making her the second woman to lead Citigroup Inc.’s unit in Africa’s most populous country.

Enwereji, whose appointment took effect from Aug. 19, replaces Ireti Samuel-Ogbu, who became the first female CEO at Citibank Nigeria in 2020. Citibank has been active in Nigeria since 1984.

Enwereji was previously Citibank’s head of global network banking across Sub-Saharan Africa, the lender said in a statement.

She has served as co-head of the global network banking unit for Middle East and Africa and as an executive director on the lender’s Nigerian unit.
